Our start
It actually started with our Grandparents.
Our story
For as long as we can remember, central to the Christmas holidays was the annual gathering to “pick the people.” As kids, we didn’t get to vote, but we did get to listen to the stories and lobby for our favorites—there was certainly some back-room advocating for one person or another—but between Christmas dinner and (our family tradition of key lime pie for) dessert, the votes were recorded and decisions were made.
Over the years, hundreds of people have been nominated, discussed and awarded grants from The Family Fund.
Our grants
Our grants are awarded to people who make their neighborhood better, their community better, and ultimately make this small portion of the world better.
They are chosen from a variety of roles: teacher, nurse, social worker, of course, but also artist and community theater and waitstaff and bus driver; those that go beyond the requirements of their activities to make the world better, extending that extra effort which is often overlooked or taken for granted by those who don’t.
Our mission
The best part of The Family Fund was that it was secret, only known in our family. Initially, only family members could make nominations. Some years later, it occurred to someone to tap this network of amazing community builders to help us find the others. Not surprisingly, they seem to know each other.
Each awardee is encouraged to nominate others.
Our family
We are now in the third generation…perhaps a bit more formal with accountants, a Board of Directors, and a website. But we remain immensely proud to continue the fundamental work of our grandparents, even as our own children start to join the vote…
